My Reading Goal

               Our Reading Goal
WALT Make a conclusion or assumption

20/6/16               Logan K and I were doing a report on Hector's Dolphin
We had to choose and then search up facts about a New Zealand native animal. Logan and I chose the endangered Hector's Dolphin.  First we had to draw a picture So what we needed to do was search up facts about the Hector’s Dolphin like a Hector’s Dolphin grows no longer than 1.5 meters and it is one of the smallest marine animals in the world and facts like the ones in the picture.

Our Next step is to order our facts into paragraphs.

Introduction
Sharks are incredible animals they hunt and their are one of the best  and I will be talking about their habitat, their diet their, appearance and how a shark protects itself

Habitat:
Sharks have adapted to living in a wide range of aquatic habitats at various temperatures. While some species of shark inhabit shallow coastal regions others live in deep waters on the ocean floors and in the open oceans. Some species like the Bull shark are even known to swim in fresh and brackish waters. Most sharks live in some places like coastal waters and oceans and habitats of some sort. Their habitat is varied according to their subs species

Diet:
Sharks primarily feed on smaller fish than themselves. Most sharks are also known to eat humans if they are confused or curious. Some species of sharks also feast on Seals, Sea lions and other marine animals. The biggest sharks in the world like the Whale sharks and the Basking shark amazingly mostly eat plankton. One big meal can keep most sharks going for many months. A few sharks are Cannibals and scavengers

Appearance
The physical structure of a shark is a key factor influencing their hunting and living habitats. A colour of a shark's body has been designed with camouflage in the mind. Most sharks average a length of about 5.8 to 7 metres long much the same as humans. One of the famous shark named the Megalodon is (which is now extinct) in now estimated to be around a whopping 15-24 metres long (50-78 ft long) and the Great white shark is now endangered. They are a very dominant species in the aquatic food chain

Protection
In some form of sharks they have been around for 400 million years and they are they are the top predators of the aquatic food chain.  Even before the dinosaurs were around roaming the earth, sharks were around hunting through the oceans. They’re such good survivors that they had little need to evolve in the last 150 million years

Conclusion
So as you can see Sharks are amazing animals and their habitat is awesome I hope you enjoyed reading this report about sharks.

Glossary

I have done well in my organization because I haven't put facts about their appearance in the Habitat Paragraph.  I have written different ideas in different paragraphs.
I have done well in writing an Interesting title,  introduction, subheading, technical words, facts various sentence beginning present tense and  the concluding statements.
My Next step is to put more descriptive verbs in to my information report.

My next steps are To put more complex sentences into my writing and to put more subject-specific nouns in my work.

Noah's Species and habitat description

WALT Describe different habitats in New Zealand and species that live in them
Success Criteria:
  1. Write an introduction
  2. Write a paragraph describing each creature and the habitat
  3. Write a conclusion
  4. Add detail about the habitat eg
    1. Plants, landscape, temperature, weather, animals living there
  5. Add detail about the creatures eg
    1. Appearance
    2. Size
    3. Species they belong to
    4. Diet
    5. If endangered
  6. Use detail and descriptive words

I have created an offshore islands habitat and have included 4 animals that live their, one endemic two introduced and one native.

The New Zealand's offshore islands contain a variety of plants like the  NZ Christmas tree(pohutukawa), Rimu and the Miro and they protect the layers underneath. On the floor you might see a forget-me-not and the five finger, fungi and the purple flower the Akeketerehe. The temperature of the offshore islands is 7- 11 degree celsius.

The endemic creature I chose was the Black robin, it is endemic because it was found on the offshore islands and nowhere else to be seen in other countries. It is a small black bird and it is endemic to the offshore islands . They live on the offshore islands for good shelter and they think it is a good place to lay their eggs. These small birds are measured to 10-15 cm. The Black Robin is an omnivore because they eat leaves, cockroaches, grubs, weta and worms.

The native creature I chose was the Duvaucel's gecko, the Duvaucel’s gecko is native to the offshore islands because they were here before human arrival. It is a small grey gecko and it eats leaves and insects they find on the ground. The size of a Duvaucel's gecko is around 300 mm long. They live in the reptile family because they are cold blooded and they have scaly skin. Duvaucel’s geckos live on the offshore islands because they have no pests that can endanger them

The two introduced species that I chose were the redpoll and the rat. The rat and redpoll are introduced species because they came over with humans, knowingly or unknowingly. Rats live in the rodent family because they have long tails, sharp teeth and sharp claws. The rats got here by boats when the humans went over. The rats main diet is eggs and they live on the offshore islands because their are bird eggs to feed them. The Rat is known to be measured 25 cm long. The redpoll is a bird. It has a red patch on its forehead. Redpoll are known to be 11.5 - 14cm long. They eat seeds and insects. They live on the offshore islands because they think it is a good place to lay their eggs and there aren’t very many predators.

The Black Robin, The Duvaucel’s geckos, The Redpoll and the Rat all live in New Zealand offshore islands.
