Perimeter, Area and Volume.

In maths we have been learning to:
  • Deduce and use formulae to find the perimeters and areas of polygons & the volumes of prisms.
  • Find the Perimeters and areas of circles and composite shapes & the volumes of prisms, and cylinders.

Here is some evidence of my learning.

Include screen shots for all of the IXL activities that you have done

You can also find evidence of my learning in my Maths book.

Koru Games Reflections

In the Koru Games the sport I competed in was touch rugby

Our team won 4 games out of 8 and we came 9th

I found the experience to be good because we managed to work as a team and did well in our first year

In terms of working with Individuals and Groups; my solo level is Extended abstract because I can reflect on how well I work with the group and seek feedback on how I can improve.

For Teamwork; my solo level is relational because I can participate and take responsibility in a team and explain my choices in terms of team outcomes.

Individuals and groups
I need help to work in a group (with teachers or other students
I can work in a group with my friends.
I can work in a group with anyone in my  year level or team

I can respond positively to the needs of others
I can reflect on how well I work with the group and seek feedback on how I can improve
Teamwork

I need help to interact with others.

I need help to participate in a team.
I can interact with others one to one.

I can participate in a team.
I can interact with others in a small group.

I can participate and take responsibility in a team.

I can participate and take responsibility in a team and explain my choices in terms of team outcomes.
I can participate in creating healthy teams by taking responsibility and critical action.

Reason with linear proportions Assessment task

WALT: Reason with linear proportions
I have been learning 3 WALTS
1.National Standard 1: Combine simple proportions to work out what parts the whole is made up in a unit of 10 like 3 yellow with 7 blue, 5 yellow with 5 blue, 4 yellow with 6 blue. Say what the fraction and percentage of each stack is for yellow and blue.

2.National Standard 2: - Combine proportions to work out what parts the whole is made up of using non-multiple of 10 like 8 yellow:5 blue:4 white with 11 yellow:11 blue:11 white (19:16:15 and 38%:32%:30%)

3. National Standard 3: - Order fractions with unlike denominators by finding a common denominator
My evidence: Assessment Task
My next step is: Know how to do these really well

Reading-Evaluate Texts

In reading we have been learning to apply some criteria to evaluate texts eg accuracy of information and presence of bias.

We have been evaluating texts against the following four criteria:
  1. Readability
  2. Accuracy
  3. Relevance
  4. Quality of language/ information.

These documents show evidence of my learning during this unit:

My Next Step: Is to continue to apply this new knowledge and evaluate texts as I read them, checking for readability, accuracy, relevance and quality of language/ information.

Review of term 2 book

The 78 story tree house is definitely one of my favorite books, it is about two friends that have a tree house and keeps on building up on the tree house by 13. In the book they are making a movie about their every day lives and how they are normally only one of the characters are left out ; But the evil cows come in and try to ruin the movie and try to make their own if you want to know more you have to read the book
I would definitely give this book a 9/10 and I would recommend it to anyone that is interested.

Drama

In ARTS this term we have been learning to:
Select and use techniques and relevant technologies to develop drama practice.
Here is a link to our online modelling book.

  • During this unit of learning we:
  • Described the characteristics of silent performances.
  • Identified different techniques used in silent performances.
  • Used these techniques in a variety of different practice situations.
  • Worked in a small group to put together our own silent performance.

The most challenging part of this unit of learning was finding out what we were doing the performance about because we would not know how easy or hard it would be

The two things that I enjoyed the most were:
  1. Planning the performance
  2. Practicing the performance

The story that my group told silently was Jak stole the fidget spinner and Daniel and I tried to get it back but we let him buy from our store

Overall I think my group worked well together because we are really good friends so we know when they are getting annoyed and a little bit tired

Maths assesment

I can apply the strategy to problem solving questions

Strategy: Deduce the angle properties of intersecting and parallel lines and the angle properties of polygons and apply these properties.

Take a piece of paper.

Fold it along the long axis and then open it up.

Now fold one corner over and onto the centre crease so that the fold line passes through the corner next to it (on the short side of the paper).

You have created some angles. There are angles of 60o and of 30o. Can you prove this? Explain your answer

Because a triangle is 180 degrees there is already 90 degrees in the triangle there must be 60 degrees and 30 degrees and add that together makes 90 degrees and 90 degrees + 90 degrees equals 180 degrees.

Term 2 Novel Study

This term I have been reading and studying the novel See ya Simon

I found this novel interesting because it taught me a lot about muscular dystrophy

During the novel I had to complete a thinking map which shows that I can classify how the author has shown the theme of the book.

National Standard this covers

  • Year 7/8  Standard
    • I can identify and evaluate the way writers’ use language and ideas to suit their purpose and I can use my growing wide range of academic and content-specific vocabulary to understand texts.

Overall I would give this novel a rating of  8/10 and I would  recommend it to others to read because it is a lot more interesting because it has got a lot of vocabulary that is useful to learn.

Current Events Term 2, 2017

WALT: I can successfully research a current event.
Here is a link to our online modelling book for this unit of learning.

The National Standard that I have been aiming for during this unit of learning is:

Year 7/8: I can use appropriate skills and technologies to find and use a range of texts for specific purposes.

Each week we have read a short text about a current event/ topic. We then formed questions based on what we had read.  After this we researched the answers to our questions and finally we gave our opinions on what we had found out.

Here is some evidence of my learning.

My Next Step is to continue to  apply the reading and  research skills that I have learned in a variety of other areas.

Careers Education C.V. Writing

C.V. Blog Post Template

In CAREERS EDUCATION we have been learning to write a skills based Curriculum Vitae.

A skills based C.V. focuses more on the skills that we have,  rather than our work history.

Here is a link to our online Modelling Book that shows the process we have followed.

Three things that I have learned about writing a Curriculum Vitae are:

  1. I learnt that you have to have certain skills to have a certain job.

  1. There is a certain style of writing that you need to write in

  1. You also have to do a cover letter with your C.V

Here is a link to my Skills based Curriculum Vitae. Link

Reading assessment

I can make links across texts by recognising connectives or adverbial clauses

In this unit learnt how to identify an adverbial clauses

A connective is a word that connects two sentences together with one word

An adverbial clause is a thing that tells you the time or place and needs a comma but needs the rest of the sentence to make sense

Here is a link to a compare and contrast map of an adverbial clause and a connective

My Extended abstract task

Use a range of multiplicative strategies when operating on whole numbers

I can apply the strategy to problem solving questions

The escape

A prisoner sits in his cell planning his escape. The prisoner is kept in by 5 laser beams, which operate along a corridor. Each laser is switched off at a specific time interval for just long enough to allow a person to walk through. The time between being switched off for each laser is shown below:

  • Laser One = every 3 minutes
  • Laser Two = every 2 minutes
  • Laser Three = every 5 minutes
  • Laser Four = every 4 minutes
  • Laser Five = every 1 minutes

The guard patrols and checks the prisoner each time all the laser beams are off simultaneously. Because each laser only switches off for a short time the prisoner knows he can only get past one laser at a time. He has to get past the five lasers from 1 to 5 in order. Laser One is at the entrance of the prisoner’s cell and laser Five is at the door to the outside. He also knows that if he spends longer than 4 minutes 12 seconds in the corridor an alarm will go off.

Can the prisoner escape without the alarm in the corridor going off?

No he can't because he will wait in his cell for three minutes and then go through the first one, then he will wait another minute going through the second, and then wait another minute to get through the third one, then he has to wait another 3 minutes to get through the fourth one, then he has to wait another minute to get through the last one. So that is 6 minutes which will make the alarm go off.

If he can escape, how many minutes should he wait before passing Laser One?

3 mins because it’s 3 minutes until the laser turns off so he has to wait until it turns off.

How much time will he have after passing Laser Five before the guard raises the alarm?

None because it will take 1 minute and 48 seconds to get out after the alarm goes off.

Review of Term 1 Books

                                     The Wizard of Oz

This is a story about a girl named Dorothy who lives on a farm in Kansas with her aunty and uncle. She is really bright and kind, there was a tornado and ripped the house out of the ground and it got caught up in a tornado and got sent to a wonderful land of people and creatures that she has never seen before. But she needs to get home in order to see her family again but she needs to go to the great wizard and do what the great wizard says. If you want to find out the rest read the book.

I like the book because I find it interesting how the tornado ripped the house out of the ground

Current Events Term 1

Current Events Term 1

In Current Events I covered these topics:
  • The design of the Halswell Skate Park and I made a submission to the council.
  • Donald Trump’s Refugee Plan
  • Christchurch Earth Memorial
  • The new Ngā Puna Wai Sports Facility
  • The Red Zone and Avon River Regeneration Plan with a submission to the council.

My favorite topic was the design of the Halswell Skate park because we put in ideas for the skate park and what we wanted in it

Here is a link to my learning on the Red Zone and Avon River Regeneration Plan.

The Reading National Standards I have achieved are (delete the ones that are not relevant)
  • Year 7 and 8
    • Identifying and resolving issues that come from competing information in texts
gathering, evaluating, and synthesising information across a small range of texts
    • I can use appropriate skills and technologies to find and use a range of texts for specific purposes.
